109 are the officially registered centuries-old trees in Sofia Municipality. The majority of them are oaks, but the list also includes representatives of other broad leaved genera, such as: Elm, Beech, Linden, Mulberry, Plane tree, Ash, as well as conifers Pine, Fir, Cedar, Sequoia and Yew. All of them are protected by the laws of Bulgaria. The ancient trees, apart from the significant ecological benefits they provide, are recognized as a national treasure for a number of other reasons. They are a bridge across generations, guardians of the people’s memory, witness of our ups and downs, healing wardens of our spiritual beliefs and folk customs. Keep them and treat them with care!
Some of the centuries-old trees in Sofia can be found on the map in your hands, but for this purpose it is good to have an adventurous spirit. We have left you a hint – the shape of the magic leaves of each of the ancient trees.
Can you find the mulberry tree where the Apostle of Bulgarian freedom – Vasil Levski tied his tired horse more than a century ago? Or the oaks, under whose shadows Petko and Pencho Slaveykovi gathered inspiration, strength and vitality of mind? Did you know that one of those oak trees is over 500-year-old?
In addition to centenarians, we have marked on the map several magical spots in Sofia, which are home to other (not so old), but no less wonderful trees. We believe that they are not to be missed and your keen eye would gladly appreciate and reward your soul.
Greetings and have a good time!
